Active / Passive Cluster-can my passive have fewer resources than active?

  • Setting up an Active/Passive cluster in Azure IaaS.

Something we are looking at for our Alwayson Failover Cluster Instances in SQL Standard in Azure was having the passive be a much smaller machine.

We didn't want to incur the cost of running a full sized system for the passive.

Is there any reason (other than reduced performance) that we can't do that?

Understanding that when it fails over to the "passive" host that we'll drop to half the RAM and CPUs the active had and thus things will run more slowly until we get our "primary" back online?

  • As long as the business accept that, I don't see any issues.
