I would like to know whether it is compulsory while doing windows failover clustering to configure one of the network adapters to have Default gateway defined.
Can anyone tell me what shld be the configuration like for public and private network for clustering in environment that is just using vmware machines for two node cluster that will be later used for Sql clustering and HA of sql 2012

you don't have to set a gateway on your NIC if you don't want to, but you won't have any ability to go outside your own network.
During cluster creation the wizard looks for a NIC that has a default gateway bound to it and uses this as the Primary client connection network
