Is Source Control right for me?

  • I'll start by saying we are not a development company. Instead we have 3 main database applications driving our business written by commercial development companies. Over the years we have written thousands of lines of T-SQL code for integrations, reports, fixes, and hacks. The file and folder structure storage for all of our scripts has become a black hole repository making it difficult to know what is relevant and what is not. Our company has only one T-SQL writer, myself, and I am really looking for a way to organize and document what we have. (I am not the primary author of much of the code we have.) I have done some research on source control software and see where it would be a huge benefit to main stream development companies but is it right in our situation? Version control aside does such software make code searchable, organized, allow for in depth commentary, and does it ease creation of documentation?

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions.
