Error when opening BIDS 2008 R2 - SQL Server 2008 R2 - Urgent

  • Hi,

from two days when I launch BIDS 2008 R2 I've an error that says it isn't possible to find one or more components and it is need to reinstall the application.

SQL Server 2008 R2 is installed on my machine with Windows 7 64-bit. Until two day ago I haven't any problems with BIDS and SQL Server.

I've already tried to remove all SQL Server client tools and reinstall them; moreover I've tried to use the repair setup feature but with no results.

I've also tried to install a new SQL Server 2008 R2 instance but unsuccessfully.

Any suggests to me, please, in order to solve this issue?

Does it exist a tool to verify the SQL Server installation and/or repair it?

Can I control any setup logs to understand which are the missing components for BIDS?

The event viewer cannot help me in this case.

    Many thanks!!!

  • try starting bids with the switch /log

This will write an activity log to (assuming standard installation of windows 7+) c:\users\your_login\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\9.0

You can double click the ActivityLog.xml file (as long as there is an ActivityLog.xsl as well) to see the report in your Browser.

Look for Red errors and warnings (start at the end and work up)...

It might give you a clue what is wrong.

  • Hi,

when you say to try starting bids with the switch /log, which command do I run?

    Thanks

  • Right click on the BIDS icon (the one you usually left click to open BIDS) and choose properties.

In the "Target" text box, add a space and /log

So you get something like (yours may differ)

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /log

  • Done.

Now, where can I read the log information?

    Thanks

P.S.: no ActivityLog xml file is visible in the folder c:\users\my_login\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0. I can see only an old ActivityLog xsl file.

  • Have you actually run BIDS after changing that shortcut?

If so, try searching under your AppData folder for ActivityLog.xml , it may be in a different folder.

  • Certainly that I've launched BIDS after the adding of the /log string.

Then I've searched the ActivityLog.xml in the entire AppData folder of my user folder but no results:

    I've found only xsl files.

    Thanks

  • You could also try the /resetsettings switch or /setup

  • Also with the /resetsettings and the /setup options I've obtained no results.

    The error remains the same.

    Thanks

Likely the lack of one or more components doesn't allow to run the minimal IDE for BIDS and so fe it isn't possible to produce a log file.

  • Use a dependency walker (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256872) to check devenv.exe file for missing libraries.

I know some software installations can change C++ runtime libraries and break Visual Studio.

Far away is close at hand in the images of elsewhere.
