    I'm a DBA.

I'm not paid to solve problems. I'm paid to prevent them.

Yes and no. As a DBA, I've tried to be proactive and look for ways to prevent issues. I've also tried to make sure I'm insurance as much as possible for the production side.

I guess I'm insurance in the dev side, being proactive with better code to prevent issues. Like alarms, devices or process changes mandated by insurance companies.

However most of the time I'm insurance, which means I am paid to solve problems when a claim is filed.

Oh, I agree. Apart from anything else, appropriate prevention techniques are a solution to that particular problem in the first place.
