Trying to restore a .BAK from another domain

  • We are trying to restore a .BAK from another domain. There are no trusts created and we are told it will stay that way. We don't have enough room to copy the backup file to within the other domain. Is there another way to restore a database using a .BAK from another domain?

    Perhaps Proxies?

    Thanks.

  • The same problem I had at my previous job. I solved it by copying .bak file to external hard-drive, brought it to my domain, inserted to a server at my domain and restored it from there. But it was very slow. External hard-drives now available up to 2 TB, hope your backup will fit in there.

  • Best thing to do is get that thing local. Any cross network process you go through is going to be extremely painful.

  • Unfortunately copying the backup or creating a trust is not going to happen. I was wondering if there is a way to restore from another domain without a trust? One of the Admins mentioned Proxies, but I don't see how that by itself will work without a trust.

  • You can use tape drive to take backup. Once backup is done in one domain you can use same tape to restore into another domain.

  • The only solutions I can think of are these:

    1) Air gap the backup file. Copy the backup file to an external hard drive from the source system and restore it to the destination system.

    2) Set up an FTP or Secured FTP site at the destination and use FTP to transfer the file from the source to destination.
