Monitoring Software

  • Hello Everybody,

I am sure that was discussed earlier, so any links will be appreciated.

We are in the process of getting a new Monitoring Software for SQL Server Production Environments. And the choice is between Foglight, Idera SQL Diag Manager, Embarcadero DB PowerStudio XE for DBA and Redgate.

I personally like Idera - used to work with it awhile back, but it is quite expensive.

Additionally, someone mentioned MS System Center for Sql Server. Never heard of that till today. Anybody is using that?

Does anyone have any fact sheets or run any comparisons for the above software, including MS System Center.

    Thank you

  • We use DellQuest Spotlight for monitoring. Foglight is more for performance management. We had Idera and dropped it in favor of Spotlight, which has improved by leaps and bounds over the past year. Comes complete with an IOS remote monitoring app that lets the DBA hit her or his iPhone for realtime systems status checking, and the alerting is extremely powerful. Also monitors Replication, Windows and VMware.

I will add that I've not played with the RedGate SQL Monitor tool, but have heard good things about it. I'd try evaluations of them all and see what does what you need. In my environment we have over 100 SQL instances and make heavy use of replication. Spotlight works well for us.

    Thanks

    John.

  • I use SQL Monitor. It does the basic stuff and is probably the least expensive to purchase.

I guess it depends on what you want to get out of the tool and how much you are willing to spend. Download a few trials and kick the tires on the trial products as that is what I did. I also gave Ideras product a try. I liked it but it does a LOT more and is more expensive as well.
