MSDB Migration

  • Hi there,

I am currently in the process of migrating a SQL 2008 R2 Cluster onto new hardware. I have set up the new cluster with identical windows/SQL versions as the previous one, then created copies of all the user databases and logins etc.

Unfortunately, we also have a very large number of SSIS packages stored in MSDB on the live server and these must all be migrated. I have seen a few somewhat complicated methods of doing this, although before I investigate too far, could someone tell me if simply restoring a copy of the live MSDB onto the new cluster would work? Obviously this would not only bring across the SSIS packages, but also the SQL Jobs, Maintenance Plans, Database Mail accounts/profiles etc., which would be a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Is this advisable? ...and would it matter if I only copied the MSBD from the live server and left the rest of the system databases as they are? I know copying the Master to a new server can be a bit of a minefield but I'm not sure if the same is true of the MSDB and if this can be copied by itself?

    Thanks,

    Matt
