Determine who SQL Server is licensed to

  • I am beginning to think this may be unanswerable (is that a real word?)...

We have a company which was acquired. This company has some SQL Server production installations in a co-location environment. We have determined that these installations are on leased hardware. What we need to determine is if the SQL Server licenses are owned by the company or if those are leased also. Unfortunately, we cannot find any records of how these were licensed. The installations are SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition if that helps at all.

    Thanks in advance,

  • You're best bet would be to contact Microsoft directly to find out what licenses the company you purchased has through them. There's nothing stored within a SQL Server installation that would tell you who owned a particular license.
