shrinking tempdb log file

  • Last week our tempdb log file grew in size and alerts started pouring in as we have just few space left on the drive. Now we have free space in the log file. Can I release the space to the OS ? If the file is used and if we issue a truncate command we will have consistency issues ........can we do it if free space is available?

If the process which filled the tempdb log file was one time only then you can shrink the tempdb log file to release the free space to OS.

However, if you are not sure that whether it can again increase to the same size because of the same process\query then there is no point in shrinking it. Rather, in this case you should move the tempdb log file to another disk with much space.

As per the URL given by you "This article discusses three methods that you can use to shrink the tempdb database to a size that is smaller than its last configured size" which I believe is not the case here.

However, I would recommend to do any shrinking of tempdb log file in the odd hours only.
