This question is lacking in context somewhat as you have given no details on your background or the course you are actually planning to undertake.

As to whether a course will be added value to your resume, well, it would depend largely on the course and then again, your background.

  • currently i am working in a small electronics company where we provide ssrs reports to the production plants .reports like daily current consumption ,material intake ,motor running hours etc.

I have 1 year experience here but I don't know how to move to a software company after working in electronics company without much knowledge about what kind of project we undertake.?..

whether software companies consider my work as relevant or not.?.

last week my friend working in other company told me to take msbi course(ssas, ssis, ssrs) I then joined the course.

now I am confused how this will help?

I have knowledge on .net but no experience..

even if I work in this company for 2 3 years i will not get extra knowledge they don't do any new kind of project.they hardly give importance to software reporting.

after 2 year if i get out of this company? what to do where to APPLY?will this MSBI COURSE help me in that situation?

    please tell me

  • I personally wouldn't move straight to a development house, try out for a position in I.T either within your current industry (to reapply current knowledge) or another industry. Where the focus is on reporting and BI, after you have gained the experience there and broadened your horizon's with other reporting tools such as Qlikview, Cyrstal reports etc then a move to a dev house would be relatively easy.

  • ya that's exactly what I am asking.whether my experience in reporting in an electronics company can be helpful to apply to a msbi or reporting jobs in IT companies? will they consider it a relevant one?.

I don't want to jump into developing .

I am asking how to be good in this current reporting field.

will MSBI course help me in that way.

  • I think that education is the first step in becoming good at something, but it is only the first step. Honestly, I would take the courses that will teach you the fundamentals. Then get into the more advanced stuff. After than, experience will be your teacher. Coursework is fine, but necessity is the real teacher of how the apply that knowledge.

In my opinion, this is why employers look at experience so strongly. In a classroom where everything is already known, nothing changes and you're graded on your own work, you get graded for what you learn. The application comes when you have to work with others of varying skill levels, solve problems where the target changes and work with users who don't quite know what they want yet, but they'll know they want more after you give them what they ask for.

So, will the BI course help you? Impossible to say. Will I.T. experience you gain at your electronics company help you in other companies if you move into the I.T. arena? Likely. All this rambling is just my two cents and I hope you find the perspective to be of use.

  • hi thank you for you time and reply

first we have to get knowledge.

    I got that ,

I am not clarified about whether my current position in small company which have nothing much do with reporting we generate reports like

    1. hourly (take 15 lines of query).

2.showing parameter values from plc(programmable logic controller device)

3.I can learn basic knowledge of reporting here.

4.but I am doing it from past 1 year no different projects almost we can even copy paste that query in almost 7 out of 10 projects.

5.projects are too small may be 2 -4 days long projects.

6.here i have one senior in this company WITH 2 YEAR EXP he is more CONFUSED THAN ME HIMSELF.

7.I am asking you can I build a successful future by staying in this company?

    8.what is your suggestion??

    9. to look for other job as soon a possible??

10.get some course (as said MSBI) move to other company.

    11. may be there somebody who faced problem like this please guide me?

A course can certainly help you plug gaps in your knowledge but it won't necessarily help you get a job.

To echo what Ed has already said here, you need experience.

    A few suggestions...

Get yourself a copy of Sql Server Developer Edition (Its not expensive) and install it on your machine at home.

Start to play around with the features of Sql Server you are interested in and set up Projects for yourself to do to learn as much as you can. You need to not totally depend on getting all the learning you need from Projects at work.

Spend some time on this site on the Forums and reading Career Development articles. You'll be amazed at how much you would learn in a short space of time.

Once you are feeling a bit more confident, go ahead and apply for some Junior positions in other firms. Attend interviews if called, this way you can not only have the chance of getting a new job but at the very least you will be able to gauge how much you know and are learning.

It's a process of learning and growing like any other. Keep at it and you'll do fine.
