Data Mining Introduction Part 5: the Neural Network Algorithm

  • Very nice article demonstrating that you don't have to know how neural networks work to use them.

For those who are curious about how they work, I wrote a neural network OCR demo back in the early 'nineties that I sold in PC Magazine. It does a pretty good job of explaining the mathematics of the feed-forward/back-propagation algorithm. It is a DOS executable written in QuickBASIC that shows the network architecture and mathematics and shows the neural network learning to recognize alphanumeric characters.

Here is a link to a zip file containing a PDF explaining how it works and the executable OCR.exe.

To run the executable you will need to download the DOS emulator DOSBox available at http://www.dosbox.com/.

  • Thanks for writing these articles. The very last sentence is cut off, what is going to be in the next article?

"In the next chapter we will talk about "
