Multi instance license with SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard in cluster

  • Hi,

I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 standard instance installed in a Cluster (in the cluster i have two node).

Now we are planning to install a new instance (so in the new clustered environment would be 2 sql instances). I have been reading some related articles and i see that if one of the instances is running at the same time in one node (active/active environment) i need new license. But if both instances were running in the same node, i also need new license?

    Thanks.

  • IIRC you can run 25 instances on 1 node, so that would be active / passive, if it is licensed accordingly

If you want to run 1 instance on Node1 and 1 instance on Node2, then you will need to purchase licenses for the second node.

As with anything licensing, speak to MS or your MS Reseller, dont take the public forum as the truth, you best get it in writing from the people who make the rules.
