Restore C drive (OS, SQL assemblies) to another disk to save the day

  • The C drive (OS, SQL assemblies) are stored in SAN Array1 and all data & log files are stored in SAN Array2. San Aarry1 is down now. To fix it, the plan is to restore a backup from C drive to a local drive and then connect to data & log files from SAN Array2. Is it OK to do it and what things I need to be care of?

  • Sounds like it should work. So long as the backup can be restored successfully.

  • Yeah, in theory it should work. But I never did it before, any suggestions during the process?

  • What's the new local drive? Are you saying you will restore c: (local) disk to a different disk?

For the array on the SAN, as long as you have the logical pathing (Drive/mount point) pointed to the same location, it should work.

  • Hi Steve,

The C drive used storage from the bad SAN before. The plan is to have C drive use local stoage. Yes, all data and log files will be on the same logical drive.

  • I suspect this will work, as the new server will just see a "c" drive. I'm not sure how you will do the restore from your SAN to the new C drive, but the SAN people should be able to do that. As long as it's bootable, it should work.

  • Steve,

This is not a new server. We will use the exsting server. Once the C drive is restored, the server should see other existing data, log, tempdb drives..

  • Thank you all! it went smoothly. All DBs are online and passed DBCC check.:-)
