Hi,
I installed the development copy of SQL Server on my Surface Pro (I have the latest one), and I installed SSMS as well. In the past when I would do this it would give the name of my laptop as the name of the server.
However, this time when I log in it comes up with no name and don't accept anything that I put in for a server name. I am not sure what I can do to get to the SQL Server.
Any thoughts as to what I can do?

Have you tried running SQL Server Configuration Manager to find out the name of the instance, and possibly also the port number on which it listens?

If you open the SQL Server Configuration Manager can you see your instance is running? Is it also a named instance and running on the default port (if yes to either of these, are you passing either in the Server name)?

I did try that, and maybe I am doing something wrong, but when I open it I do not see anything there. it says no items to show in this view.

Perhaps it didn't get installed properly. Can you see SQL Server in the Services applet?

I agree, does seem like the install wasn't successful, or, perhaps, you've thought you've installed SQL Server by installing SSMS. SSMS and SQL Server are 2 separate installations and neither require the other to be installed on a machine. Perhaps that's what you've done?

Configuration Manager works well, but can be confusing. If you look at Services, do you see a SQL Server service? Is it running and is the SQL browser running?
If you try to connect, can you do so through the ip of the machine?
You might check the logs as well, which will give you the listening port. These are text files, but your laptop application log should include the data for startup of the service.

So, is it fixed now? I'm not sure if that "not" in your last sentence is meant to be there or not (that sentence reads awfully). Currently it reads that you haven't managed to install it, but I'm not sure that's your intent.
