Connecting to an Availability Group

  • Hello,

I'm setting up a 2016 ENT Availability Group with 2 VMs. I want to better understand my connection options.

    Server Names: VM1, VM2
    Cluster Name: C1
    Availability Group Name: AG1
    Listener Name: L1

I know that I can connect via server names, cluster name and listener name. Should I be able to connect via Availability Group name i.e. AG1? At this point in time I cannot connect via AG name and I wanted to make sure that is correct.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

  • You should connect to your listener name, this will ensure you're always connecting to the R/W Replica copies.
Treat the AG itself and the name as a logical collection, not a connectionstring.

  • Thanks for the response. Yes I fully plan on using the Listener name. I was just curious on if I should be to connect via the Availability Group Name as well.
