Go from SQL 2008 R2 standard edition to Developer?

  • I have a DEV/QA Server with SQL Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard Edition.

I recently upgraded the Production Server from Standard to Enterprise.

When the paperwork was submitted I questioned the licensing on the DEV\QA box and I was told that I did not need an Enterprise License for that machine that I could go with the MSDN Version. I questioned them and I said did they mean the Developer Edition.

I had my concerns and I read the thread.

You input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Welsh, I'm not really sure that I understand the question:

    1. Dev/QA Server has Standard

    2. Prod upgraded to Enterprise

Now is where I am confused... Why would you need an Enterprise license for a Dev box?

The DEV\QA Box should have the same capabilities as the Production box.

One feature that it should have is partitioning.

This environment is for a Data Warehouse.

    Thanks.

Ok, the capabilities of Developer Ed. are exactly the same as Enterprise Ed. So, all you need is a Developer License for that box.

  • I am in a similar position. What I am attempting is a repair with the media of my intended version. This process appears to be performing a comlete re-installation. My SQL Server instance is not running ATM so my confidence is high when I do a @@VERSION, I will be at my desired version.

  • Hi Mark.DBA would you please explain quoted part in detail , where can I find this Setup dir and other steps .

The basics are this. Install Developer edition and """"look at the registry in Setup dir. Take those keys and copy them to Ent. server"""". You have to restart SQL Service for it to "know" it's now Developer edition.

    I appreciate .

    Thanks
