Break AOAG

  • Hello,

I'm looking for advice on breaking a 2 node cluster / AOAG down to a stand-alone instance, the catch being without changing the way the applications connect. There are about 8 different SW Dev. apps that have DBs on this instance.

I was thinking of creating a DNS record with the listeners name and address redirecting to the remaining nodes IP. That way the apps still point to the same name and address but are forwarded to the remaining node. Is this too simplistic?

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

  • Well you could just break it and have a 1 node AOAG cluster that way you dont have to mess around in DNS.  We all know every trouble starts with DNS right.  Just remove the replicas you don't want from the AG then evict them from the cluster.

But if you wanted to remove the cluster completely and then remove the AOAG, you would want to create a CNAME instead of an A record, so the CNAME points to the left over hosts A record, that way you dont need to change DNS if the hosts IP changes for some unknown reason.
