Problems installing SQL 2008r2

  • Hi

Just thought I'd let everyone know about the trouble I've had installing SQL 2008r2.

Got the CTP back in November, installed it with no trouble at all on Win&, Vista and Win2003.

Come the RTM it's been a pain to install from day 1. Go the subscriber downloads on MSDN, download the Developer ISO and extract it, and every single time it fails to install correctly on a Win2008r2 Standard 64Bit. Always coming back with the same error messages

MSI Error: 2337 The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2337.

No matter what I did, I always got the same error, and it meant I didn't install SSRS and the database services. Should I try and repair it I always got

The ENU localization is not supported by this SQL Server media

After this I couldn't even remove SQL and try again; the only thing I could do was rollback the server and start again.

In the end I used our high level Microsoft Software Assurance 24/7. We batted things back and forth a few times - she suggested downloading the ISO again (I did - it made no difference), suggesting the ISO was corrupt (okay, but as it's the only version, what could I do?) and replacing various DLLs hidden in the depths of the extracted files.

In the end - out of sheer frustration, and going on the fact she'd sent me the DLL replacements in WINRAR, rather the WINZIP, I extracted the ISO from MSDN using WINRAR, ran the install on a fresh box, and guess what? It worked first time. No error messages. No replacement of DLLs. No issues.

Basically it looks like the ISO doesn't extract properly using WINZIP. So use WINRAR for the time being, and your life will be a bed of roses (ish).

  • Thanks. I used WINZIP to extract the source for SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard. Looks like I need to get my server rebuilt.

  • Hi,

Pls explain me how did you rollback the server. I am going through the same issue now.

Started uninstalling all SQL Server related stuff but it doenst let me do it.

It pops up with the below error:

    ---------------------------

    SQL Server Setup

    ---------------------------

SQL Server setup media does not support the language of the

OS or does not have ENU localized files.

Use the matching language-specific SQL Server media

or change the OS locale through Control Panel.

    ---------------------------

    OK

    ---------------------------

    No idea, whats going on.

  • SOLUTION:

    1. Identify the installation languages available on your SQL Server CD. Make explore CD. You must see 1033_ENU_LP , 1036_FRA_LP or other directories according to your language of purchased.

    2. Identify the Decimal Identifier language number that corresponds to the language you have in your CD.

Refer to the list to find your language: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722435(d=printer,v=WS.10).aspx

In my case i choose the 1036 identifier number (wich points to french, france). Because i have the 1036_FRA_LP directory in the installation cd.

    3. In control pannel chose /Regional Language options /Location

(The language, keyboards, and location must be configure in your OS according to the list)

    It works !

    Let me know.

    Pablo
