    Microsoft also offers a 128-way SKU for Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition so Windows can run on a 128-processor computer. However, the largest partition supported would be 64 processors.

    64bit edition != Itanium

    "normal" 64 bit = 32 processors.

    I too think that there should be points refund.

  • With my outstanding search engine skills, I found the Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition site that has this:

    "The high-end Windows Server scales up to 64 processors".

  • Itanium is a 64 bit processor. The question did not specify x64, it merely said 64 bit windows and the software supports 64 processors. It may be nitpicking, but the first URL given says 2 to 64 CPUs, and then contradicts itself in the table with a limit of 32.

    Windows 2003 is built to run 64 CPUs.

  • I dunno about this answer, as http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/64bit/x64/datacenter.mspx has all of the points in your question and states 32 processors. Could the documentation be incorrect?

    I don't like being wrong but I also like knowing when I am wrong so I can learn. 😀

  • that URL, for x64, has two conflicting items. There is a para that says: "Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter x64 Edition supports up to 2 terabyte (TB) of RAM (with Service Pack 1) on 2- to 64-way. Supported processors include:" (Emphasis mine). Below that in the table it shows a limit of 32 CPUs.

    My understanding is that teh W2K3 Datacenter, x64 is limited to 32 CPUs, but I see a whitepaper (http://www.microsoft.com/servers/64bit/whitepapers.mspx) on deployments, that says up to 64 CPUs. I'll ping MS and try to get a more definitive answer.

    This one, on Itanium support, (Windows Server 2003 on Itanium), shows 64 CPUs.

  • Just for reference, several years ago (2006) one of my co-workers did install just such a configuration for a customer and then did run the tests to demonstrate that SQL Server was using all 64 processors.

    And yes, it was Itanium.
