Can SQL Server backup to a NetBackup drive?

  • Are there any brilliant people here who have figured out how to do a native SQL Server backup to a NetBackup tape drive (using SQL Server without using NetBack)? The NetBackup tool writes backups to a NetBackup tape drive. We should be able to use SQL Server to write out it’s backups to the NetBackup drive too if we have the NetBackup library. The Oracle folks here have figured out a way to do it. If someone knows how then we can use all the features of the backup and restore commands instead of the limited functionality of NetBackup.

  • Why don't you just use the NetBackup SQL Server Agent to do your backups?

  • Our arm is being twisted to use Netbackup. The only reason management wants NetBackup is to use less expensive tape drives. If we can continue our backup practices but change the location of the backups to the NetBackup tape drive, everyone wins.

  • I want to know how to do this exact thing as well. I want to be able to utilize NetBackup as the backup tape device to send .bak files directly to tape. I am already aware of how the SQL agent works so no need to try and sell me on any alternatives.

Anyone with insight on getting THIS to work, your help would be appreciated.
