I would skip the 2008 exams as they are expired. I think you can still take them, but they won't give you a certification.
The 2012 exams are the way to go.

SQL Server 2008 R2 exam is still valid and it is not going expire in near future.

One exam would give you MCTS and it will never expire.

I beg to differ:
Upcoming Exam Retirements and Availability of Related Certifications

The retirement date has been extended to July 13th of 2014 though, so you better hurry.

Where does it say that its going to be expired in July 2014?

Check out my this thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dcbd0172-37ab-42b4-aa0f-2dc64eb958be/exam-70433-sql-server-2008-database-development?forum=CertGeneral

Bear in mind, 2008 exam has been changed to 2008 R2 long time ago and i decided to study for 70-433 after doing my research.

The date of July 2014 was found in a forum, just like the link you just posted.
Not exactly the best resource material, as it can get outdated fast.

As per microsoft list of expiring exams, 70-433 is not there so i think it will expire in 2015.

Look at this link;
