Event Notifications - Basics

  • A basic article on what these are and how to get started with them. Practical examples encouraged.

  • I jokingly came over to look, knowing my favorite topic wouldn't be on there. Color me stunned, and color me interested in writing an article!

Let me go through and figure out the length, etc. I'm running it on something like 80 servers at work, and it's one of those "how the hell did I live without this" tools. Which is why I've been presenting at SQL Saturdays (2 so far, 4 more submitted).

  • And since it's 2:30 in the morning and I'm waiting for some UPDATEs to finish - it was a pleasure meeting you in Albuquerque at SQL Saturday. I was even presenting on this very topic! (And as I think we discussed, I'm still looking for a good name, though I've submitted recently with "SQL Watchdog". Seems corny, but hopefully catchy enough.

I'd love suggestions for a better name.

  • Article submitted! Please let me know if it's too short. I can (and do) go on for hours about this, but I figured a basic tryout would be enough to pique people's interest.

    Thanks!

    Michael

  • Thanks, I'll take a look and get you feedback.

  • Steve, I just came across an old article by Jonathon Kehayias about Event Notifications (http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/Event+Notifications/68831/). IMHO, his seems to cover pretty much everything mine does, and a bit more, albeit from a different angle (and that may be what you want).

If what I've submitted isn't what you're looking for, I'd like to revisit it, incorporating aspects of my SQL Saturday lecture, specifically capturing changes to a table and multi-server implementations. That will take a couple more weeks, as I'm on the hook for a presentation for my local User Group next week.

  • No worries. Haven't gotten to it, but it's on the list and in the Q
