Quick question: Is SQL Monitor from Redgate worth the money? I've never used it, but I wanted to know other's opinion.

Grant Fritchey works for them, so he will say good things about SQL Monitor.

Has anyone used SQL Monitor here? I am looking more of a review.

Why don't you download a trial, play with it for 14 days and decide for yourself if it's worth buying after that time?

I have used RedGate products faithfully for the last 6 year. I recommend it quite frequently to others, and I use it religiously (as I'm writing this reply I have it open in another tab as part of my daily routine). The custom alerts are great for expanding the functionality and their support team is awesome.

Aside from it being useful for the DBA, the analysis graphs it offers can be extremely valuable during team meetings and to show management different activity (management loves graphs). These graphs have been great in tracking down problems, and identifying trends.

That said...can you do it all with tsql, ssrs, excel, etc?...sure you can, however for shops with a single DBA, it's likely that you have quite a few other projects that require your attention. In my opinion, SQL Monitor has been a great tool in my belt to assist me in observing new environments, as well as continuous monitoring.

This.

In addition "worth" is different for different situations. Depending on your environment and work load, you might "need" some tools, or they might never get used.

I've tried the trial version for a period of time. I found it to identify issues/problems well enough to take a pro-active approach in averting any major problems. So in other words, it does the job.

My personal opinion there are other tools out there that do just a good of a job, if not better. I am in the later stages of running the various trials. I'm rather sure I know which way I'll go with, probably not the Red-Gate Monitor.

Others you can look at are the Idera Diagnostic manager or the Quest Spotlight or Foglight.

I do use the Red-Gate SQL Compare & SQL Data Compare which work very well and am pleased with their results.

I've found that monitoring tools, for the most part do their job, it is a matter of what makes sense to you in the GUI and how easy it is to react to issues/problems.
