SQL 2012 and Windows 8

  • Hi all,

Has anyone of you been able to install SQL 2012 Developer Edition (64 bit) on a machine running Windows 8 Enterprise Edition (64 bit)? Just asking because my colleague tried just that today, and it comes up with a message saying the operating system isn't supported? Somehow I can't really believe that, but I saw it with my own eyes :w00t:

    Thanks in advance,

    Jan

  • I am happily running SQL 2012 Dev Edition on Windows 8 Pro and oddly enough Windows 8 Enterprise is not listed as a supported OS here.

  • Reminds me of when I first started working with SQL Server. If you installed SQL 6.5 on Windows NT above a certain service pack level, you'd get a "not tested on this operating system" warning.

This is an example of "Not supported" meaning anthing from "won't install" to "it might work fine, but we're not promising that." SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise is "Not Supported" on Windows 7, but have an instance installed there and have tested several Enterprise features successfully.

  • Hmmmm... This is a not just a case of "Not Supported", it blindly refuses to install! Yes, I've seen earlier versions (I don't think it was 6.5, maybe 2000 early betas or so) where you got that kind of message, but it would still install. "Just don't expect any support" what the real message should have been reading 😀

opc.three, thanks for the link you gave me. There is says under "Breadth Editions of SQL 2012" that it is supported on Windows 8 Professional 64 bit as well as Windows 8 64-bit, where the latter leads me to believe that it should work under Enterprise as well. Your thoughts?

  • I agree, it ought to work unless they are repositioning SQL Server away from Enterprise use and moving more towards Home use 😀

  • I am also on PRO, so it worked, but if I get a chance I will throw a quick enterprise VM up and see...

Yep, installs just fine for me, both in 32bit and 64bit environments.

edit: changed picture to show it was enterprise 64 bit.

extra thought: were you maybe installing a feature that was not compatible? I just installed the engine and management tools...

No, it didn't get to the point where one can choose which features to install.

Anyhow, thanks all, I got the answer I was after. We'll try it again later today and let you know how it went.

  • There's another version of the 2012 installer that comes pre-loaded with SP1 (SQL_Svr_..._Edition_2012_w_SP1). It might be worth trying in case it's an installer issue that was fixed in SP1.

  • There was another thread with a similar problem that turned out to be a missing .NET Framework 4.0 install and the error message was less than helpful.
