  • I get it: "then", "than", "there's", "there are". Stop reading (and I did), it can't be coherent.

  • Grreat article, Craig. If people actually study what you wrote, they'll be able to spot and separate the "dream jobs" from the "jobs for Bob" from the "SQL God" jobs and the "We need something so let's ask for everything" jobs. For anyone actually looking for a job in our line of work, this should be a huge help.

Huh? Could you specifically quote where you found this incoherent for those reasons? I fear you've confused the heck out of me here.

Edit: even stranger, that post was at 10:38 PM before the article released. wha?

    Thank you.

That's my hope. This originally had about 10 example postings in it showing different difficulties, but the length got a bit overboard. My hopes is there'll be enough interest that to organize a part two to this with more particular examples of problems, but we'll see. I'm hoping this article (and a few of my others, both published and yet to be written) will help both sides of the fence.

I'm sorry to say there isn't a big enough facepalm emoticon for the current state of job advertising in our industry. You're competing with employers looking for the most bang for their buck, HR firms/departments who know as much about tech as most techies know about oil rig equipment, local laws regarding job duty requirements, Visa (not the credit card) Renewal laws, and consulting/hiring firms who know more buzzwords then technology. They've had more practice at this then you probably have, and it can be difficult figuring out what's good and what's not.

Let's review a concept I brought up in my previous article before we get started. For SQL Server, there's 5

"then" and "there's"... I didn't find it incoherent. I claimed "it can't be coherent". If I were reviewing resumes, you go in the Engrish pile.

For swapping there's (there is) and there are? Then and than are another common accidental swap, and unfortunately not just by me. I'm sorry you found a few simple errors to be so disconcerting. However, if you'd be willing to assist me by proofreading the next article it certainly couldn't hurt.

If you're looking for a translator, a teacher, an editor or a proofreader, demanding perfect English in a resume is probably sensible. This article, however, is about DBAs, and I've met plenty of database professionals with fantastic attention to detail and appalling English. If you focus on side issues, you will, sooner or later, overlook something both relevant and important. And if you rejected this article on the strength of those two mistakes, you shouldn't be in a position of evaluating resumes.

Then I suggest you don't read anything I've written (and I'm a native-born English speaker) as I have the tendency to occasionally swap 'or' and 'of' without noticing and seldom does a proof read or grammar check pick that up.

Oink? You stop reading a technical article about some (minor) grammar issues that 90% of the entire world wouldn't notice?

You must be missing a lot...

On topic: great article Craig. I get frustrated a lot with those job postings of HR/consultancy firms who don't know what the technical content is, so they'll just add some buzzwords. And demand that you speak at least 3 languages fluently, be proficient in at least 5 different domains in IT (which aren't necessarilly linked) and that you are a workaholic. And you can't have more than 3 years of experience, or you're too expensive.

Don't forget two written referrals from two living Presidents. 😛 Sorry... did I spell that correctly?

Is that one referral per president or two from each? If you can't write clearly, I might dismiss your whole post as incoherent.
