    Can you explain about how logical drives helps to improve the performances of server and how it works ?

    what are the benefits of making the logical drives ?

  • A logical drive is a partition of a physical drive. It can be a complete partition of a drive or a partial partition.

    A physical drive is where you determine performance. A single physical drive offers no protection and doesn't perform as well as a RAID drive (usually).

    A SAN typically bundles physical drives into arrays that can have a logical drive presented to Windows.

    I'm not sure what you mean by "works the same". A SAN is a much more complicated I/O subsystem.

    will it improve the performance by spliting the physical drive into many logical drive in SAN or not ?

  • First physical drives matter. If you have 20 logical drives on the SAN that all are built on the same physical drives, you aren't helping.

    You have to clarify what you mean by physical drives. Are these drives located inside the server machine? Typically these are DASD (direct attached storage device) as opposed to SAN, which is a network device.

    If you can get your data onto more physical drives, usually in a series of R1 or R10 arrays, performance often improves, but you should have some metrics that show what performance is now, and how a new configuration might imrpove that.
