Backup Software Selection

  • I am looking any suggestions for current backup software solutions for a recently installed Windows 2003 / SQL 2000 system. I am looking the product that you use and why. This machine is test/live environment and looking to buy the correct backup program for SQL. I would use Acronis for a complete mirror backup of the total server or even Backup Exec. I am looking for something that can perform a complete backup or the backup of just the databases. Looking for a quick recovery time solution.

Any suggestions on this topic would be very helpful.

  • We use Backup Exec for the server backup and native SQL Backups for the databases. I have not heard good things about the SQL Agent for Backup Exec.

  • We used Red Gate SqlBackup 5.0 (great stuff- compression, multiple CPUs, friendly UI) to backup to disks

DBs from 20 GB to 5 TB and then Symantec Backup Exec to copy backup files to tape. At least for last 3 years (do not remember exactly, sorry)- no problems

  • In the last 7 years i've used either Litespeed or SQLBackup and they're both good, although SQLBackup would be my preference.

  • I liked Idera's tool at my previous job, but now use Redgate backup which is ok too.

Most tools offer a free trial so you can try them out.

  • Data rescue 3 is best software for data backup. I used it regularly for my system backup.

  • In addition to Native Backup for Databases, I have only used LightSpeed.

I would take a look a Redgate's Product because LigthSpeed is so expensive.

  • I use EaseUS Todo Backup Advanced Server for following reasons.

1)I have ever used its free edition, perfect. And I want to try its advanced Server edition.

2)Its average price, normal backup software for SQL Server backup and restore charges too much.

    3) It supports SQL Server 2000/2005/2008

4)I like its wizard, brief and informative

5)Its trial version has successfully restored my database recovery and I decided to buy it.

6)Its free, lifetime and good technical email service leaves me good impression.

Isnt the Idera software licensed per instance?

I've been away from it for 3 years, so I don't know their current pricing plans.
