Hi All,
We have a very busy OLTP setup here.You can consider this as an Enterprise which has being doing Business across the globe for various clients.
Now, with respect to forecasting and taking Business decisions, we currently DO NOT HAVE A Datawarehouse.
We are planning to set up a warehouse for all the data which can be used for various reporting and forecasting purpose using SSIS/SSAS/SSRS
Can someone please send across some links or other materials that could be help to design the warehouse and go ahead with the other operations?
Any help in this regards would be greatly appreciated!!

Read Kimball's The Data Warehouse Tookit, 3rd edition. Google it; it's a free PDF download and also the most authoritative, comprehensive guide of all time for helping you formulate your datamart.

It allows for various purposes and corresponding appropriate theories of normalization or de-normalization as the case may be, but overall its focus is to guide those who want to set up a data mart for access by reporting analysts.

This is not advice on what to do, but HOW to do it.

I have been involved with 7 different data warehouse / BI initiatives with companies of various sizes over the years. Almost all have gone over budget, were full of data issues, or abandoned. They generally were worthless for almost two years.

The main reason? All of them tried to do the whole project at once. They all tried to swallow the elephant in one bite!

I recommend breaking this into smaller parts, and tackling them one at a time. Simple advice, and common sense, but when the folks with big titles start saying "We need a data warehouse!!!!", IT usually jumps.

Right now, we have started out concentrating on sales data. The learning curve about data warehousing, and BI in general, is steep. We have taken this as an opportunity to learn and grow at the same time.

details of volume of data you wish to analyse may help

.....why do you think you need a datawarehouse...what benefits do you expect to see ?

Guess I hadn't verified it specifically, per se, as the IT e-books website brazenly offers it for free as PDF download and claims it is authorized to do so for "personal, informative use" or something like that.

However, I take the claim you made seriously and I will look into it. If I am wrong I will make a correction to my comment (etc).

Paul, The site I had found the PDF download offered from was on the first page of a simple google search "Kimball Data Warehouse Toolkit". Being offered so brazenly, I hadn't really second guessed the legality of the content.

However, taking your comment to heart, I've contacted Wiley and their legal team has confirmed that in their opinion the site is piracy and is distributed stolen content. I'm destroying my PDF copy and ordering one on Amazon today.

Thanks for pointing this out to me. I certainly retract my earlier comment encouraging anyone to a free download. The people who work hard to build reputations in a professional area deserve every penny. In the future I'll be a bit more skeptical of all of the free downloads out there on technical books.
