Connecting to a remote database

  • Forgive me if this is a lame question?

We are moving data centers 20 miles apart.

We would sooner have as little down time as possible.

If we move a web server to the new location, and have it connect with the existing db server, does our web server "ODBC socket" connect securely?

Or will we be sending unencrypted traffic over the "wires". Right now the traffic only flows inside a rack.

Realizing the speed will be much slower as we have to wait for the lag time over the various hops.

We would then build a clone (table free) SQL server in the new rack, disable SQL on old server, copy the db itself to new server, bring IT up, and have 10 minute downtime rather than 1 day downtime as we dismantle everything and move it. It this SOP? (We are not into clustering which would probably provide an even smoother switchover.)
