DWH Practice

  • Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice for practicing DWH architecture/development with scenarios as close as possible to the real world. I have experience mainly with Relational Modeling, but I'm interested in DWH solutions. I've read one of the Kimball book's and have some experience with SSIS..

May be what I'm asking you guys is how you started your DWH careers / those of you, who are a self-learners/? How you gained experience on that filed? - it is definitely not possible only with reading books..

    thanks

  • I found a company that was willing to invest in me.

They hired me as a junior BI developer and they put me on a project with some senior DWH developers who taught me most things.

  • Thanks for your reply,

this sounds as the most natural way, but I don't want to change my job at this moment, so this is not an option for me. Or I have to look for a remote position somewhere as a second job ... which I think is impossible for Junior 🙂

If you don't want to change jobs, you'd have to find your challenge in your current job.

ETL Developer roles is another way to get into MS BI arena.

It takes a minimal capacity for rational thought to see that the corporate 'free press' is a structurally irrational and biased, and extremely violent, system of elite propaganda.

Society has varying and conflicting interests; what is called objectivity is the disguise of one of these interests - that of neutrality. But neutrality is a fiction in an unneutral world. There are victims, there are executioners, and there are bystanders... and the 'objectivity' of the bystander calls for inaction while other heads fall.

  • Changing the job is not an option here, but I can do some work in the ETL field remotely if it will get me on. The problem in this case is to find someone to collaborate with.

  • I took a job with a small company wanting to get into DW and BI, which is where I wanted to go. I was a strong candidate for covering all else the position needed to do (and generally stuff I enjoy), so me and the boss learned together much of DW/BI.

That paved the way for me to get a real dw/bi job that I have now (I love small companies - I am The ETL Developer, Warehouse Watchdog, etc). Again, new team here, I was very early to it, we have learned and grown over the past couple years and new challenges are coming.

Honestly, it is difficult to get an IT job from book reading, you really have to have your hands in it to be more attractive than the candidate that has done it (I was turned down a lot for DW/BI jobs before I had actual experience and I am quite Can Do). Enthusiasm and book learning will only take you so far.

That said, see if your current employer has any plans to go the dw route and volunteer to be on that team. it would be so much better for you to moonlight for your own company if at all possible.

It will be extremely difficult to get a job like that if you are not looking for another job so it's very difficult to advise you. If you have a recruiter you have worked with before and respect, this would be a good conversation to have with them as they could keep their eyes open for a junior dw role that you might want to jump at (altho I do not know what ties you to your current job).

    Good luck!

  • Oh, and Microsoft Adventure Bike Works is a great place to start. Easy to understand business model so grasping the concepts is rather straightforward.
