Backup in suspended state

  • Hi,

In one of my production servers, the backup is going to suspended state with "ASYNC IO completion", and it is taking long time to complete.

I have contacted my system admin to increase the virtual memory and paging. Microsoft recommended to have 12 GB, but we have 20 GB configured in our system.

But still the backup for 3 databases are going to suspended state with ASYNC IO completion. The size of the database are as follows 83gb, 49 gb, 19 gb.

Kindly tell me if there is anyway i can avoid this ASYNC IO issue. Also let us know the exact reason for this issue.

    Thanks in Advance

    Regards,

    Devanand.

  • ASYNC IO looks like related to your backup place IO issue and nothing related to virtual memory.

    is the backup gets completed?

  • Yeah, previous week it took 3 hrs and it did not complete. After increasing the virtual memory, it took 45 mins to backup the 82 gb database, though it was in suspended mode.

What could be the actual issue? Do you mean there is some issue with my backup target location.

Am taking backup to my local drive.

    Regards,

    Devanand.

  • what makes you to increase the virtual memory?

what is the sql error log and windows log says at that time?

  • Initially all the application jobs running on the server got failed, because of IO issue. So admin recommended to increase the virtual memory.

When the backup was in ASYNC IO, it dint complete. When i killed the session id, in sql server log i received an error saying that "backup command failed to backup the database"

Windows Admin team is saying that there are no error logs.

    Thanks,

    Dev.

  • can you post the hardware server configuration, like processors, and drives are ordinaly HDD or san drives. backup drive details

Definetly looks like sql is waiting for something.

  • Hi,

Please find the hardware details below

    IBM XSERIES_3650 Intel® Xeon™ MVcpu 3.20Ghz, RAM:8GB

We are taking backup to H: drive whose free space is around 157 GB.

  • what about drive and backup drive details?

if their speed is low or any hardware issue there this might happen.

Have you taken a look at "Avg. Disk Queue Length"? Is it under acceptable limit?
