Hi Guys,
Im looking to learn SQL server and database management but with a wealth of resources, websites and books im struggling on where to begin.
A little bit about me and my SQL abilities:
Ive done a degree in Mechanical Engineering but graduated at the height of the recession and somehow managed to get a job as a Business Information Analyst,
My company has had redundancies and they have told me that i am now incharge of the DataWarehouse :w00t:
Ok so in terms of my SQL abilities:
I taught myself SQL Language, to a level where i can now quite confidently query anything within our database using all types of joins and aggregate functions.
I can import data from excel and linked servers (Already established) into the warehouse
T-SQL is something which really baffles me so any pointers on where to begin so i could become more competent at what im doing would be fantastic

Since you already know the basics of SQL, you can read this TSQL book by Itzik Ben-Gang (it's not that easy, but you'll learn a lot from it):
Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals
A more introductory book perhaps is the following:
Training Kit (Exam 70-461): Querying Microsoft SQL Server 2012
It's on prerelease for the moment.
Since you're in charge of the Datawarehouse, you should read up on the Kimball methodology if that is what your company uses:
The Data Warehouse Toolkit: The Complete Guide to Dimensional Modeling (Second Edition)
Also, get up to speed with BI development in general using the SQL Server BI stack:

a better way to start- get to the basics, subscribe to sqlservercentral ; read the daily article, go through previous articles .. that would do , i think

I have been reading articles on SSC and i do find them extreemly well written and informative, however i need some form of structured learning.
Ive taught myself all i know with help from SSC and other forums,
Ill look up the books above and see how i get along,
In terms of qualifications for the near future,
do you think it would be advisable to do a Microsoft certification?

Sure, you can get a certification. You'll need some real life experience though.
But at least it will force you to look at aspects of SQL Server you're not familiar with.

i was chucked in the deap end much like you seem to have been and it worked for me, i picked the basics of TSQL quite quick
still learning lots and lots daily 10 years later 🙂
