Licensing Question?

  • We have a software inventory software that pulls licensing information off our computers 1000's and SQL is the data store. Do I need to license SQL for every computer it pulls inventory from. Of just license every user/device that accesses the information?

This software is not used to manage the pc's just inventory. Would this still be middleware and have to license each pc that sql pull or the pc posts data to the SQL?

  • Thats a great question for a sales rep, and a careful reading of the EULA; unless there is a Microsoft sales rep floating around on the forums I wouldn't rely on any answer someone gives you in the forums. And even then I'd probably still want to verify an answer with Microsoft anyway.

Licensing isn't something you want to be wrong on, even mistakenly so.

The way I'm reading your post: you are referring to this "software inventory software" using SQL Server as a backend database and then the software inventories each of your computer devices and stores that information inside of the SQL Server database.

Are you required to license SQL Server for every computer it inventories? Or just license it by device/user that is "querying" the database?

That would best by answered by a sales rep or Microsoft rep. Most people/companies license their SQL Server installations by the number of sockets/CPUs on a server, this allows for unlimited access by users. The OS is licensed by number of devices or user connections, I don't believe SQL Server is licensed by device access.
