Installing SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition hangs on "Setup is starting the server and installing your chosen configuration..."

  • Hi folks

I am trying to install SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition onto a Virtual Server which has Windows XP Professional SP3 as it's OS.

The installation gets as far as installing the MSSQLSERVER service and creating Microsoft SQL Server folder within Program Files. It then hangs on a screen stating

"Setup is starting the server and installing your chosen configuration..."

and it will not move on from this. I have to kill the installation using Task Manager to End Task it.

Can anyone help me find out why the installation is not completing?

    My thanks in anticipation.

    Kind regards,

    Michael

  • Are there any errors reported in the setup logs?

  • Hi!

Did you find any solutions to this problem?, because I have the same problem in a Virtual Machine with Windows 2003.

    Thanks!!

  • Hi

Yes we got it sorted. We were trying to install this onto a virtual machine, running the installer from a seperate server which wasn't working.

We copied the installer over onto the virtual machine itself and ran it from there.

    It worked ok after that.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

  • You can get problems even on SQL 2008 R2 if you try to run the install on a networked drive. It is always best to have the install media on a drive that Windows thinks is local.
