Two reasons your backups might not be deleting ...
1) you are running SQL Server 2005 version which had a glitch in the "Maintenance Cleanup" task.
2) Your backup time is set to 24 hours, so if the files were even 1 second too late they will not delete. Meaning...
Lets say your backup starts at 12:00AM and Finishes at 12:15AM.
Your delete starts then it will look for all files starting at 12:15:01AM yesterday. If the the file was finished creating at 12:15:00AM it will not delete... because it's 1 second short of reaching 24 hours. I usually set my hours delay to 20 hours to delete.
