SP1 and SP2 on same server but different instances?

  • We have a server with two instances of SQL Server 2005. Both the instances right now had SP1 applied on them. Now we want to upgrade SP2 on only one instance, ie. instance 2. Is it possible to keep one instance on service pack1 and other on service pack 2?

    Thanks in Adv.

  • Yes. When you apply service pack, you can choose what instance(s) you would like to apply the service pack.

  • Thanks. You made my day. I know it works in SQL Server 2000 but never tried it with SQL server 2005.

  • The question I would have is though how does having a different Service Pack on different instances effect Integration Services ? If you have alot of packages for both instances do you patch that or leave it at SP1? Will that cause problems ?

  • How about considering each instance as a standalone server separated from others? That is what in my mind.

  • Both instances are working good but we don't have any SSIS packages on both servers, so can't say how integration services would behave.
