It was painfully slow and unsupported the last time I ran into that type of setup. It was used for small, low use third party products.
It should be better now and how much better depends on what the OS is - you would want the latest SMB protocol. It's been supported since SQL Server 2012. You can find more information in this link:

You probably need to test and see how well it works. I'm not sure I'd use it with DR - what happens if your DR environment becomes your main production environment? I'd be hesitant but it's based on past experiences which wouldn't be the same today
