    You may want to consider using pass-thorough  authentication.  This would make your enterprise more secure, as no passwords will be hard-coded into the linked server.
    It will, however, require Kerberos authentication to be configured, provided both servers exist in trusted domains.

    That an option, however, in some organizations the linked server could be a SQL Server that is stand-alone in no domain, an Oracle Server or MySQL server.  Kerberos authentication would not work with Oracle or MySQL as I understand it.
