Can't see cube in Excel?

  • Hello,

I am a DBA. I've only used SSAS a few times. However, I have installed it and the database engine a few times.

Now, the users are telling me that a cube that is in production is viewable in Excel. On this server, there are two cubes.

One I can see in Excel, data from other services - analysis services.

The other cube, I can't see. I am told this is the same cube that works in our QA environment.

I checked the QA enviornment and I see the security is the same as in production. The firewall rule are the same.

One thing that I noticed is different.

When, in SSMS, I look at the role properties - dimensions data -on the cube that is not showing, I see an error message. "Error retrieving children".

When I look at the dimensions, I see state "unprocessed".

Would this cause the cube to NOT be visible in Excel? If so, how do I change the process state?

Things will work out.  Get back up, change some parameters and recode.

  • Whatever system that's in place to refresh or reprocessing the cube has failed. You need to process/ reprocessing the cube. Just be aware or careful though, processing may be an action that takes several minutes through to severalhours.

  • Hi Steve,

I am newbie and might be wrong but even though Cube is not process or has failed to process, i should be able to see and access the cube in Excel. The data might be wrong but , still i can still see the cube.

  • No, Steve is right. You won't be able to access the cube unless it has been successfully processed.

  • Just as a follow up.

I went into SSMS and then analysis services.

I right clicked on the cube and went to browse. There was an error. I then right clicked and clicked on process. Once it finished processing, I was able to see the cube in excel.

So I learnt a little something of troubleshooting of Analysis services via SSMS.

  • If the cube is unprocessed, you can't see it in Excel or browse it in any other client application.

If it fails to process, it will remain unprocessed. If it completes with errors, you'll be able to see it with wrong information.
