Commvault restore problem

  • Dear All,

Seems like we have an issue with Commvault (version 9) with restores, hope if the scenario is familiar for anybody.

We are using SQL Server 2008R2 by the way, but the problem is Commvault here.

    We have created following backups:

    1. Full backup (ran few hours)

    2. Differential backup (ran approx. 20 minutes; started at X; ended at X+20)

    3. Log file 1, this was created exactly during the Differential backup was running; started at X+8; ended at X+12

    4. Log file 2. (started at X+40)

    5. Log file 3.

    Now the restore story.

We restored point-in-time for 1-5, Full backup was restored, Differential backup was restored and

finally the restore of log file 2 was aborted with message "log too new", which makes sense.

The Commvault restore "forgets" the log file 1 completely in the restore process.

    Is this familiar for anybody?

This sounds to me like a bug in the Commvault software, issue is addressed to supplier, but not solved on short notice.

Any alternatives we can use to make this restore work?

We are thinking ourselves about restoring the Full backup only, and applying the logs only (not the Differential)

to see if we can reach the same target.

    With kind regards,

    Roger Hoogeveen
