• I took a job with a small company wanting to get into DW and BI, which is where I wanted to go. I was a strong candidate for covering all else the position needed to do (and generally stuff I enjoy), so me and the boss learned together much of DW/BI.

That paved the way for me to get a real dw/bi job that I have now (I love small companies - I am The ETL Developer, Warehouse Watchdog, etc). Again, new team here, I was very early to it, we have learned and grown over the past couple years and new challenges are coming.

Honestly, it is difficult to get an IT job from book reading, you really have to have your hands in it to be more attractive than the candidate that has done it (I was turned down a lot for DW/BI jobs before I had actual experience and I am quite Can Do). Enthusiasm and book learning will only take you so far.

That said, see if your current employer has any plans to go the dw route and volunteer to be on that team. it would be so much better for you to moonlight for your own company if at all possible.

It will be extremely difficult to get a job like that if you are not looking for another job so it's very difficult to advise you. If you have a recruiter you have worked with before and respect, this would be a good conversation to have with them as they could keep their eyes open for a junior dw role that you might want to jump at (altho I do not know what ties you to your current job).

    Good luck!
