Upgrading from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2012 R2

  • We're finally going to be upgrading our old SQL Server 2005 instance, to SQL Server 2012 R2. Therefore I need to upgrade my development environment as well. Currently, on my dev box I'm at SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition, I want to upgrade to SQL Server 2012 R2 Developer Edition. Do I uninstall 2008 R2 and then install 2012 R2? Or do I do something different?

  • If it’s your dev. environment this is what I would do. Backup your stuff first all of it, Uninstall 08R2 completely, including the all folders. install 2012.

  • I always recommend full install too. Upgrade-install doesn't give me a warm-and-fuzzy at all.

DITTO! Upgrading is painful and I avoid it all costs, backup, backup, backup, uninstall, install! πŸ™‚

  • btw, there isn't a SQL Server 2012 R2. There's only SQL Server 2012.

  • It seems pretty unanimous. I'll uninstall SQL 2008 R2 Dev. Ed, and put in SQL 2012 Dev. Ed. (Thank you, Gail, for pointing out that there's no 2012 R2.)
