Is there any value in learning SQL Server 05' now ?

  • Hello Everybody,

I've begun learning Sql Server 2012 and i'm just loving it.

I'm a budding DBA/Designer and as i'm learning this platform it has occurred to me that i should get my feet wet into 2008 if anything but to learn upgrade and migration between the two platforms.

But i've been wondering if i should go back even further to 2005 and touch on it as well ?

I guess what i'm really wondering is there substantial t-sql differences between 2005 and 2012 ?

I've been learning Oracle in parallel but i think i'll switch mostly to SQL Server since it's so damned fun. 🙂

I hope you guys can give me some tips.

    Thanks for any assistance,

    Michael 🙂

  • It's always benefitial to know the previous versions, but that would be more helpful if you are in support role or migartion project and you are willing to engage in roles where you need to work on 2005.. If you don't anticipate these cases, I'll suggest not to go for 2005. You should have exposure to 2008 because you may have to work on it as not everyone is using upgraded version. To summarize, get a feel of 2005, majorly limitations. No need to dive deep into it. That's what I think 😉

  • That's what i thought might be the case. I'll poke around and at least do migration scenarios from 05' to 08'-12'. 2008 i definitely plan on working on during my studies.

    Thanks for the reply 🙂
