Will doing a backup slow down the system

    Hi

    I need to do a backup of our database I was just wondering if I could do it during normal working hours without bringing everything to a grinding halt.

    Or should I wait until out of hours?

    A backup does a huge amount of IO. If your system is not bottlenecked on IO, if the additional load the backup puts in place doesn't impact queries trying to read data, then the impact may not be noticable.

    Okay thanks Gail, I think I'll leave it until after hours to be on the safe side
