Hi, we are about to have an AD upgrade from our current Windows 2000 SP4 domain to Windows 2008 R2 domain.
I run an SQL 2008 R2 cluster on Windows 2008 R2, Just wonder if there is anything i should be aware of before my AD guys finish the upgrade. At this stage they have started rolling out Windows 2008 R2 DCs but haven't upgraded the AD functionality level yet.
Is it just a matter of making sure the two DCs i point my cluster boxes at stay read/write DCs and they don't mess with the permissions of the cluster service account in AD? any other gottyas that people who have done this can point out?
I'm not an AD guy btw!
I figure i just run the Cluster validation after pointing the servers to the new AD boxes and make sure thats ok then try a failover?
They actually plan to pull the two DCs i point my cluster to down one at a time and upgrade them to Windows 2008 R2 one at a time and then promote them back to DCs. So in theory i don't have to actually make any changes from my end?

as long as you have access to a DNS server and a domain controller it shouldn't make any difference to you.

As I read your post the AD domain is not being replaced but upgraded. I think that should be fairly painless, nothing that I can think of that should be problematic. But because I'm paranoid, I'd do a transaction logs right before the switch is made, just to be sure.

Correct domain is being upgraded. they have already started replacing the 2000 AD DNS/DC with 2008 r2 DNS/DC. They advised the two dns/DCs i point my cluster at will be done in the next few weeks. The DNS names of the servers will change but they will have the same IP addresses, so from my end nothing should need to be changed.

Are you referring to the node computernames?
What do you mean DNS names will change?

I have two local DNS/AD DC i pont my cluster nodes at. they are for example dns1 and dns2, when they rebuild these to Windows 2008 r2, they will keep the same IP address as the current dns1 and dns 2 but they will have a new netbios name of dns2k81 and dns2k82 for example. Not changing the node names of any of my cluster nodes if thats what you are asking.
