SQL 2000 maintenance plan/Optimization - reorg database and indexes - Running SLOW

  • I have inherited the management of a SQL 2000 server (running on MS Server 2003 in a vmWare environment) that has been having some performance problems. One thing I noticed while looking at some of the logs for completed data maintenance tasks, is that prior to a specific date the optimization task that did the reorg database and indexes on a specifice database typically took about 45 mins, but, since a specific timeframe (mid March '13) it never takes less than 5 to 8 hours. Around that same timeframe (mid March '13) we have seen severe slowdowns in that environment/sql server but not absolutely sure the two issues are related since the environment slow down is occassional and the long processing time for the reorg is consistent. It was like there was a line drawn in the sand...

I have done INDEXDEFRAG on the tables/indexes that appeared fragmented and I have checked with SHOWCONTIG and the indexes don't look fragmented any more.

I haven't done a rebuild on the indexes yet because I can only imagine it will take a large block of time and that server and data is used almost around the clock.

Any thing stand out to anyone? Any suggestions of things to try to troubleshoot the issue...especially things I can do while the database is still online?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
