Even though I was taught first way, I always use the second way as well 🙂 as I have data consistency issue with the first way in many cases. Your data need to be perfect to make first way to work, otherwise better use the the second. By perfect I mean no nulls, no unclean data, all rows are populated with correct data.. I assume you are having some nulls or data inconsistency...
