What do DBAs need to know about networking technologies?

    Hi,

    Could anyone point me to a reference or two that describes the kinds of networking knowledge (technical not social or business networking :-p ) that are important for DBAs to master?

    I realize this is probably a huge topic, but I'm just looking for an entry point to form a list of things to study and practice.

    You should at least understand the basics of TCP\IP networks, these are just some of the items you should have a basic understanding of IMHO

    • DHCP
    • DNS
    • IP addresses
    • Subnets
    • default gateways
    • Network binding orders
    • NetBIOS

    You should also know about firewalls and the SQL Server Network Interface. If you want to know more about the protocolls SQL Server uses start here.

    You need to have a basic repertoire of networking jokes.

    1. I know a great joke about UDP, but I'm not sure you'll get it.

    2. I've got one about TCP packet delivery, but many would consider it out of order.

    3. I know a great IPv6 joke, but I just don’t think you’re ready for it.

    4. You can't reach Heaven with TCP until you ACKnowledge your SYNs.
