Hopefully RG doesn't mind this post, but I'm just curious what freely available add-ons to SSMS or BIDS do you guys use? We are RG customers at work and use several of their products, but on my personal system and side projects I have to go with freely available tools. With this I'm curious to see what free to inexpensive add-ons do you guys use or recommend... or don't recommend?
SSMS Tools Pack[/url] is one I've used for a while. It's not free, but the cost is like $30 which isn't bad.
OpenDBiff[/url] is another tool I use quite often to compare databases schemas.
I just ran across ApexSQL and haven't used it yet, but their Complete, Refactor, and Search plugins are free. I've actually been looking for a good Refactoring tool, so this might be something I install soon.
Anything else you'd recommend? Thanks --

I use the RedGate tools at work and at home, and that works for me.
I used to use the ApexSQL tools, but haven't in a while. They were very good back then, and probably still are.
I've used the free version of Confio Ignite where I couldn't get the for-pay version. Really good performance monitoring/tuning tool.
I've also used BIDS out-of-the-box without any mods/add-ons, and can get the job done that way.
But I'm also the kind of person who once wrote a 1000 or more lines of VB.NET code in Notepad, because I didn't have any of the dev tools for that, and got that job done the very hard way, but done nonetheless. So I may not be the best example of "my own convenience". :w00t:

I wish I could use RedGate products outside of work, but unfortunately I don't have the funds to purchase their tools for my personal systems.

My employer paid for it for me. Since I have to work from home periodically, they agreed to that. Goes right along with the VPN connection they provided.
I had to ask for it to get it, but I firmly believe in asking.

I had to ask for it to get it, but I firmly believe in asking.
I generally just VPN into my work system and do everything there, so there's no real reason for them to spend the cash to license my home system.
I've installed ApexSQL, and it's actually quite nice. The free plugins include search, refactoring, and auto complete which are neat. The auto complete isn't as slick as SQL Prompt, the Refactor still does some funky things which I'm sure I can fix with configuration, but the Search is amazing! I'm not sure if RG has a similar product, but I can definitely see me getting some use out if it.

Just so you know, many of the Red Gate softwares are licensed per user. This means, as long as it is you using the software, you can install it on more than one machine. Prior to working for Red Gate, I had their stuff installed on three different machines, but they were all mine. I was the only user, so it was perfectly legal.

Personally, other than monitoring tools from other vendors, I never found anything compelling enough to use on a daily basis except for the Red Gate stuff. Mladen's software is the one exception but you already have that listed.

I didn't know this... I figured it was per workstation. I have SQL Prompt loaded at work so it would be nice to have it on my personal laptop as well. Cool, I might do this, if you're sure it doesn't validate the RG license.

I'm absolutely sure. As long as it's a single person using them, you can install Prompt to multiple locations.
